What is a hashtag?
Any word or phrase preceded by a hash sign (#) is a hashtag.
Hashtags are one of the important factors that drive content on social media! But do you know the origin?
The hashtag was made popular on August 23, 2007, by Chris Messina on Twitter. And then eventually all major social media channels like Facebook, Instagram adapted the “hashtag” way.
Now hashtags are used to find information, connect with a specific theme or content, or topic. Hashtags also make it easier for the audience to explore the content they like and build a conversation around it. It has been one of the essential strategies for brands to connect, interact and engage with their audience, create targeted campaigns for specific customer segments and products.
Hashtags make it easy to cut through the clutter and focus on what is necessary. In 2021 and beyond, the usage of right and relevant hashtags are the most significant way for your voice to be heard.
How to use hashtags effectively for your content:
- They always start with # but they won’t work if you use spaces in between, punctuations, or any symbols.
- Your account should be a public account otherwise your non-followers won’t be able to see your hashtagged content.
- Keep your hashtags short and easy to remember
- Pay attention to what influencers and competitors are using
- Use 5 generic hashtags, 5 specific to your offers hashtags, 5 audience specific hashtags, 1-2 brand specific hashtags, and experiments with 3-5 hashtags
- Lastly, limit the number of hashtags to 15-20, if you use more than 20 social media channels may flag your post as spam.
To maximize hashtag engagement, check the engagement and audience insights provided by social media channels. This will help you to analyze which posts worked well and which didn’t.
We have curated a hashtag checklist for entrepreneurs like you to implement in your content strategy. You can pick and choose, add new, remove some and see which hashtag is relevant, and most importantly which hashtag is working for your brand.
